Unbound Book Festival, April 23

unbound

In view of the recent outcry surrounding a Tennessee school board’s decision to ban Art Spiegelman’s Maus, and the increasing prevalence of similar actions throughout the country (including Missouri), we really wanted to have a conversation about banned books this year. Is it ever appropriate to ban a book? Who is really being protected, and from what? Brian Katcher brings a unique double perspective to this issue. In addition to being an acclaimed author whose novel, Almost Perfect, was 81st on the American Library Association’s list of most banned and challenged books for 2010-2019, he is also a school librarian. He’ll be joined on the panel by Maia Kobabe and the Dean of MU Law School and First Amendment expert, Lyrissa Lidsky.

And now, North Carolina

This woman in convinced that a North Carolina middle school has a secret copy of ALMOST PERFECT (as well as a much better book by David Levithan) and is shocked that that principal won’t let her turn the school upside down to look for it. Ironically, North Carolina is the one state that ever awarded me a state book award.

I find it interesting that ALMOST PERFECT, which was published 13 years ago, is being pulled out of the library. Quite frankly, there are much more recently books about transgender people out there. I’m guessing the censors just pulled it because it was LGBTQ themed without bothering to learn anything about it. With censors, it’s always the ‘what’, never the ‘why.’

On to Utah!

On to Utah! Someone is determined to remove the ‘dirty books’ from the Beehive State and ALMOST PERFECT made the list! Click on the cover and read the naughtiest passages from my novel, weirdly taken out of context in a giant run-on sentence: https://bwentzel6.wixsite.com/website-7/shop?page=2

Almost Perfect Challenged in Iowa

The homophobes are after ALMOST PERFECT in central Iowa (and some other much better books). I don’t think they even look at these books before challenging them.

So a Texas lawmaker has challenged ALMOST PERFECT (along with 849 other books). Lots of LGBTQ books on this list. Lots.
