‘Almost Perfect’…racist?
Posted on Wednesday, 13th June, 2012
I must say that I was very surprised at this review, which accuses Almost Perfect of being a racist work. I’d be interested to see how the people out there view this. Comments?
The reviewer sounds like a college student whose eyes have just been opened to the injustices in the world and is responding with over-the-top political correctness. I would hate for authors to suck the life out of their work by scrubbing out every potentially offensive phrase. This reviewer really sounds like someone who doesn’t read a whole lot, or else this book wouldn’t stand out as objectionable.
I’m shocked but happy that my review came to your attention. I think you did tremendous work with the trans subject matter in Almost Perfect, and I hope you might consider my criticism with an open mind because you do have a lot to offer as an author. Maybe your next one will be Perfect.
I find the comment “this reviewer really sounds like someone who doesn’t read a whole lot” laughable used to describe the author of the review, who is a librarian by trade and training and has not only read but also reviewed hundreds of YA books.
This book was great. I am 13 and it was part of our book club and it was a book that kinda opened your eyes to real life situations. Some parts were weird and confusing but the book was spot on. It being racist is sooooooo untrue.
