I drove 740 miles in two days

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

And it was totally worth it. On Friday I went down to The Cape Girardeau Library where I got to talk about being a writer to two groups of teens. Quite frankly, I worry about the youth of today. When I was a teen, I was interested in normal things, like video games and vandalism. But these kids showed up at the library during summer vacation, with intelligent questions and interesting opinions. And I can tell they read quite a bit. Kids today…sheesh.

After passing out in a motel in Poplar Bluff (there was a time when I would have just slept in my car), I stopped by to see my old friend, Dave Malone, who’s an amazing poet. We caught up on the old days, when we did community theater together.

Finally, I drove to The Library Center in Springfield, Mo, which I initially mistook for a small aircraft hangar. This is the most impressive library I’ve seen since New York. I got to rub elbows with other YA novelists, such as Holly Schindler, Brent Crawford, and Jenny B. Jones. The teen volunteers were extremely nice, and they actually followed through on my request for a bowl of M&Ms with the brown ones taken out.

I’d really like to thank both libraries for having me, I had a most excellent time.
